🔐 Overview

This Privacy Policy explains how Tapetchi ("we," "us," "our," or "the app that convinced you to adopt a virtual intestinal parasite") collects, uses, and protects your personal information.

We take your privacy seriously. Almost as seriously as your worm takes his meals.

📊 Information We Collect

We collect the following types of information:

Account Information

Sign in with Apple: When you sign in with Apple, we receive a unique identifier and, if you choose to share it, your email address. Apple's privacy-focused authentication means we never see your Apple ID password.
Display Name: An optional username you create for social features.
Friend Code: A randomly generated code for connecting with other users.

App Data

Meal Logs: Food category and time logged (we don't store the actual food name, just that you ate "carbs" or "protein" at a certain time).
Worm Data: Your worm's name, species, length, age, mood, and accessories. Yes, we track how long your virtual parasite is. For science.
Achievements: Milestones you've unlocked.
Notification Preferences: When and how your worm can emotionally manipulate you.

Device Information

Device Identifier: For push notifications and to sync your data across sessions.
App Version: To ensure compatibility and provide support.

We do NOT collect your actual location, contacts, photos, health data, or anything from your device that your worm doesn't directly need to survive.

🎯 How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

Keep Your Worm Alive: Sync your worm's growth, mood, and accessories across devices.
Enable Social Features: Let you share your worm with friends and compete on leaderboards (if you opt in).
Send Notifications: Deliver your worm's increasingly concerning thoughts and meal reminders.
Process Purchases: Handle in-app purchases for accessories and premium species.
Improve the App: Understand how people use Tapetchi so we can make it better (and weirder).
Provide Support: Help you when things go wrong.

🌍 Leaderboards and Social Features

If you participate in leaderboards, the following information may be visible to other users:

Your display name (if set)
Your worm's name, length, and species
Your worm's accessories

Leaderboard participation is optional. You can disable social features at any time in Settings.

Your real name, email, and account details are never shared with other users or on leaderboards.

🔒 Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored on secure cloud servers (Cloudflare Workers and PocketBase). We implement industry-standard security measures including:

Encrypted data transmission (HTTPS)
Secure authentication tokens
Regular security audits
Access controls and monitoring

Your worm's data is important to us. Almost as important as it is to him.

🤝 Third-Party Services

We work with the following third-party services:

Apple: For Sign in with Apple authentication and in-app purchases.
Apple Push Notification Service (APNs): For sending notifications.
Cloudflare: For hosting our backend services securely.

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for marketing purposes. Your worm would never forgive us.

👶 Children's Privacy

Tapetchi is rated for ages 12+. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us immediately at tapetchi@oneway.co.nz.

📤 Data Export and Deletion

You have the right to:

Export Your Data: Download all your data from within the app (Settings → Export Data).
Delete Your Account: Remove all your data from our servers. Your worm will be sad, but we'll do it.
Delete Your Worm: The "Take Worm Tablets" option removes your current worm but keeps your account.

To request complete data deletion, email us at tapetchi@oneway.co.nz with "Delete My Data" in the subject line.

🌐 International Users

Tapetchi is operated from New Zealand. By using the app, you consent to your data being transferred to and processed in New Zealand and other jurisdictions where our services are hosted.

For users in the EU/EEA: We comply with GDPR requirements. You have rights including access, rectification, erasure, data portability, and the right to object to processing. Contact us to exercise these rights.

📝 Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we'll:

Update the "Last Updated" date below
Notify you through the app if the changes are significant
Your worm will probably have something to say about it too
